Scientists celebrate Nigerian Professor Charles Adetunji’s high achievements

MOMBASA, KENYA – Stakeholders gathered in Mombasa, Kenya for a workshop on genome editing that is being spearheaded by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), are celebrating one of their own, Professor Charles Adetunji, who has attained the prestigious number 1 position among the top 500 prolific authors in Nigeria, a distinction he has maintained since 2020, as recognized by SciVal/SCOPUS.
Prof Adetunji is one of the instrumental scientists contributing to the production of genome editing communication modules meant for stakeholders like farmers and regulators of biotechnology.
Dr. Meluleki Zikhali, a Scientist with a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics, and Head of the Seedco Group Molecular Laboratory, who is attending the ongoing GEd workshop in Mombasa, said having a person of Prof Adentinji’s calibre in the team that is coming up with modules on communicating gene editing is enriching.
“It is very impressive to have in our team of scientists, Prof Adutunje contributing to gene editing communication modules. The end product is certainly going to be of high quality. I congratulate him for being adjudged the best scientist on the African continent. The fact that Mrs. Florence Nazare, the Head of AUDA-NEPAD’s Centres of Excellence Knowledge Management and Programme Evaluation Directorate has managed to bring to the table scientists of high quality like Prof Adetunji to the table of genome editing means the future of this biotechnology to improve food and nutrition security is bright,” Dr. Zikhali said
Prof Adetunji recently clinched the number 1 spot in two distinct fields: Biological Sciences and Agricultural Science, surpassing 500 prolific authors hailing from 58 different countries across Africa.
Professor Adetunji boasts an impressive track record of publishing numerous scientific journals and conference proceedings in refereed national and international publications, accumulating over 580 manuscripts, including more than 40 books and multiple scientific patents. His remarkable Google Scholar i10-Index stands at 136.
An alumnus of the University of Ilorin, Adetunji completed his BSc and MSc degrees in 2004 and 2009, respectively.
Currently, he holds the esteemed position of Director of Research and Innovation at Edo State University Uzairue, Edo State, Nigeria.

Prof Charles Oluwaseun Adetunji is presently a faculty member at the Microbiology Department, Faculty of Science, Edo State University Uzairue, Edo State, Nigeria, where he utilized the application of biological techniques and microbial bioprocesses for the actualization of sustainable development goals and agrarian revolution, through quality teaching, research, and community development. He was formally the Acting Director of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, the Head of the Department of Microbiology, the dean of the Faculty of Science, and currently the Chairman Grant Committee and immediate Dean of the Faculty of Science, and the Director of Research and Innovation at EDSU.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, UK; Fellow of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria; Fellow of the Nigerian Young Academy. He is a Visiting Professor and the Executive Director for the Center of Biotechnology, Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan. He is an affiliate member of the African Academy of Science. He is presently an external examiner to many academic institutions around the globe most especially for Ph.D. and MSc Students including the University of Johannesburg, South Africa among many. Recently, He was appointed as an external assessor to the Department of Biotechnology from Addis Ababa University to help in the establishment of Prima facie candidates to be promoted to the rank of Full Professor.

He has won several scientific awards and grants from renowned academic bodies like the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) India, The World Academy of Science (TWAS) Italy, Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NPF) Netherlands, The Agency for International Development Cooperation; Israel, Royal Academy of Engineering, UK and National Research Fund, (TETFUND) among many others. He is presently a consultant to the Government of the Republic of Serbia in Europe as a Project Peer Reviewer of the Science Fund in the areas of Microbiology, Nanotechnology, Food Science, and Biotechnology.

He was recently listed in Stanford University’s World Top 2% Scientists Rankings for 2023. He has published many scientific journals, and conference proceedings in refereed national and international journals with over 580 manuscripts including over 40 books and many scientific patents with Google Scholar i10-Index 136. He was ranked recently as number 1st among the top 500 prolific authors in Nigeria between 2020 till date by SciVal/SCOPUS and recently he was ranked number 1 in two different fields Biological Sciences and Agricultural Science among 500 prolific authors from 58 different countries in Africa. He is presently a series editor with Wiley and Sons, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, USA, and many others editing several textbooks. He has participated in more than 100 international scientific conferences and workshops which entail an Invited talk, a Plenary speaker, a Keynote speaker, a Chief panelist, a Lead guest speaker, Chairs of Sessions, and Judges of posters from several continents of the globe.

He is the President and Chairman Governing Council of the Nigerian Bioinformatics and Genomics Network Society and he is the General Secretary of the Nigerian Young Academy and former chairman of Biological and Health Sciences Working for the Nigerian Young Academy. He is currently the assistant general Secretary and the National Coordinator for the South-West Nigerian Society for Microbiology. He was recently appointed to the Young Investigator Award Committee by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, USA. He was recently appointed as the Vice-President and Nigerian Country Director of the Genetics Society of West Africa and also appointed as the Director of the International Affiliation and Training Centre for Environmental and Public Health, Research, and Development, Zaria. He is the Business Manager for the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria.

He was recently appointed by the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (CoE STI) to participate in different countries in Africa as a senior expert and consultant to help in the development of curriculum in Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, and Genome editing in different countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi among many
