In a sign of deepening cordial relations between the two countries, Zimbabwe’s all-weather friend, Türkiye, is offering local students top-notch tertiary education scholarships for various academic disciplines.
Addressing delegates during a send-off tea program with students who have been granted Turkish scholarships this year and graduates from Türkiye, Her Excellency Berna Kasnakli Versteden, the Ambassador of Türkiye to Zimbabwe said the scholarships provide opportunities for successful candidates for them to improve their human resources development and foster mutual cooperation between the two republics.
“This gathering is meant for the Turkish Embassy officials to meet with a few graduates from Turkish universities and students who were granted scholarships to study in Türkiye this year. These scholarships provide opportunities for successful candidates for them to improve human resources development and foster mutual cooperation between the two republics.
“When you graduate, you will give back to your country. The scholarships also improve people-to-people conduct and interaction. We also want to hear feedback from former graduates from Türkiye universities. As we maintain ties with Zimbabwe, there is a need to increase the number of scholarships.
“A number of new programmes are on offer as Türkiye is working to match new developments at the global level. There are various scholarship packages for various tertiary academic disciplines. These include all engineering programmes like aeronautics, mechanical, bio-medical, petroleum and natural gas, electrical and electronic, chemical and civil engineering; medicine; pharmacy; dentistry; faculty of economics and administrative sciences; pure arts; fine arts; and theological studies among others,” HE Versteden said.
Brian Mandisodza, who got a scholarship in 2015 to study business administration and finance in the year 2015 was fortunate enough to get a scholarship to pursue a Master’s Degree in the same discipline at Istanbul University. He encouraged scholarship grantees to work hard and excel academically so as to attract more opportunities for themselves.
Charles Chirikure, the Director of Konak Enterprises who went to Turkey in 1986 on an educational scholarship echoed the same sentiments. He came back to Zimbabwe in 1993 after successfully completing his studies at Dokuz Eylul University and started Konak Enterprises, a successful construction company that is thriving up to this day.
One of the scholarship beneficiaries, Phillip David Tenenti, is going to study Management Information Systems (MIS) at Ankara Yildrim Beyazit University. He promised to come back to the country and work towards bridging the digital divide between the rural and urban areas.
Ruvarashe Nyaruwata will pursue a Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering. She has a passion for aircraft engineering and looks forward to sharpening her skills in that field.
“I have a huge interest in designing and manufacturing aircraft. During my Masters, I discovered my passion for understanding why seemingly perfect aircraft fail. As part of the research, I manufactured a section of an aircraft wing but during the test, the specimens failed before the predicted time due to internal failure. This sparked an interest to investigate and contribute to providing a solution to this common problem of aerospace materials.
“From an academic perspective, Türkiye has a good history and its technology is advanced. I expect to use the knowledge to improve aircraft performance. I like travel photography and cuisine and Türkiye is among the best in offering these so I look forward to the scholarship with eagerness,” Nyaruwata said.
Tariro Zizhou is going to study computer engineering, a sector that will deepen her interest in electronics and the use of technology in offering digital solutions to the country.
