The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province, Hon Ezra Chadzamira, has said Zimbabwe has managed to sustain food and nutrition security through United Nations Agencies’ support in the country.
He made the remarks in Masvingo today at a workshop by the United Nations in Zimbabwe to build partnerships and the capacity of the media to contribute to the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), communicating and advocating together to facilitate one common voice that amplifies the development agenda.
“As I stand before you today, I applaud the splendid work that the United Nations has achieved in Zimbabwe. We have managed to sustain food and nutrition security in Zimbabwe through United Nations Agencies’ support. You are working with the Government to achieve SDG2 which is to achieve Zero Hunger through supporting targeted vulnerable households in rural and urban areas to have improved food and nutrition security as well as supporting communities to cope with climate change and build resilience,” Hon Chadzamira said.
The UN is engaged with the Government of Zimbabwe to achieve SDGs in the country. These include, among others, social services and protection; poverty reduction, and value addition; food and nutrition; gender equality; HIV and AIDS, as well as public administration and governance. It is also helping the government to cope with climate change and building resilience to climate shocks including the El-Nino-induced drought.
In a speech on behalf of Mr. Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting services, Mr. George Chisoko, the Director of Media Services in the same ministry said the media’s role includes informing the public about the Sustainable Development Goals themselves and, more crucially, their importance to the wellbeing of the nation.
In addition, he said the media is expected to highlight the progress, challenges, and successes of NDS1 projects that are being implemented to ensure the achievement of the SDG Agenda.
“In that regard, the media should also showcase the best practices and innovative solutions that spur the development of our nation. As you are aware, the media in Zimbabwe has played a pivotal role in showcasing best practices and innovative practices in Agriculture that have seen Zimbabwe being declared a food-sufficient country. Not a day goes by without the media highlighting developments in our agricultural sector. Same with innovative solutions that were showcased by the media which culminated in the establishment of innovation hubs at various universities,” he said.
HE Edward Kallon, in his remarks at the same gathering, reiterated the fact that the United Nations Development System in Zimbabwe actively supports a robust media landscape that ensures accurate, timely, and objective reporting on development, recovery, and humanitarian issues.
