The newly appointed United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator to Zimbabwe Ms Mario Rebeiro has paid a courtesy call to the Vice President Kembo Mohadi at his Munhumutapa Offices in Harare to discuss issues concerning food security in Zimbabwe.
Speaking to the press on the 10th of January 2020,VP Mohadi highlighted that Government will continue to work with UN and accepted the body’s support in ensuring that hunger is eradicated in the country.
“So we had fruitful discussions about how we could move forward towards what Government is undertaking to end drought in Zimbabwe. We discussed about the food security situation, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and efforts the UN is making to work in collaboration with the Government concerning the extension of humanitarian support to the nation,” VP Mohadi said.
He also indicated that government was working tirelessly to guarantee that food programmes and resources are provided to ensure that people do not suffer from hunger.
Following climate change which is adversely affecting Zimbabwe and other countries at large, Ms Ribeiro pledged to continue engaging with the Government working on food security rendering humanitarian assistance.
“We work with our member states and different countries with Zimbabwe being amongst the SADC countries. Therefore, given the current impact of climate change which is negatively affecting Zimbabwe, the UN country team will continue to work closely with the Government to ensure that humanitarian assistance in as much as food security and other aspects is improved. The challenge is not only about food so there is need to look closely on those issues,” she said.
Ms Ribeiro stressed that as the Secretary General has launched the new decade on the 31st of January in line with the SDGs, it was of paramount importance to make sure that equity prevails as well as ensuring that no one is left behind in as much as the impact of drought is concerned.
