As we commemorate Unity Day on December 22, we, the Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD), take this opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices and commitments made by our forebearers to unify Zimbabwe. Unity Day serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of solidarity, mutual respect, and collaboration in shaping a prosperous and inclusive Zimbabwe.
The Unity Accord of 1987 marked a pivotal moment in our history, a commitment to peace, reconciliation, and the advancement of Zimbabwe as one nation under God. It is our responsibility to honour this legacy by promoting cohesion, fostering dialogue, and ensuring that every Zimbabwean, regardless of ethnicity, region, or background, feels represented and valued in our national fabric.
However, as we celebrate this day of unity, we are deeply concerned by the actions of groups like Mthwakazi, which seek to advance divisive and foreign-funded secessionist agendas. Such movements threaten to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Zimbabwe and undo the progress we have made as a united people.
The call to divide Zimbabwe into two countries is not only unconstitutional but also counterproductive to the aspirations of millions of Zimbabweans who desire unity, peace, and development. LEAD strongly condemns these secessionist ideologies, which serve no purpose other than to create instability and foster despondency within our nation.
We acknowledge that grievances exist in our society and affirm our commitment to addressing these through inclusive policies, equitable resource distribution, and open dialogue. The division will never be the answer—unity is.
On this Unity Day, LEAD reiterates its dedication to building a Zimbabwe where every citizen enjoys dignity, equality, and opportunity. We call on all Zimbabweans to reject divisive narratives and stand firm in safeguarding the unity and peace that have been hard-won over decades of struggle.
Let us celebrate our diversity, embrace our shared identity, and work collectively towards a Zimbabwe that prospers as one united nation.
Unity is not just a legacy; it is our future. Together, we will build a better Zimbabwe. Happy Unity Day Zimbabwe!
