Renowned Zimbabwean dancehall musician, Winky D, is facing unexpected challenges ahead of his much-anticipated Crossover Show at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on December 31, 2024. Despite securing the venue as early as May 2024, Winky D and his management team have encountered a scheduling conflict with the venue owners, Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG).
In a statement issued yesterday by his legal counsel, Tsunga Law International, it was revealed that the HICC owners have prioritized another event on the same date, disregarding the previously established agreement with Winky D. This development has created significant uncertainty around the artist’s ability to deliver the exceptional performance his fans have been eagerly awaiting.
“Winky D remains enthusiastic about delivering an exceptional crossover performance at HICC on December 31, 2024, a venue his fans are very familiar with,” the statement reads. “He values the connection he has with his fans and is dedicated to providing a memorable performance, having invested significant effort into preparing for this event.”
The majority shareholder of Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) in Zimbabwe is the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), which holds 91.60% of the company’s shares. Other significant shareholders include the Government of Zimbabwe and the Government of Libya, with 3.34% and 2.40% shares respectively.
Currently, discussions are underway to resolve the issue, but further details remain undisclosed. The situation has left Winky D and his team in a challenging position as they strive to meet the expectations of their loyal audience.
“These unexpected external circumstances threaten to disrupt what has been highly anticipated by both Winky D and his fans,” the statement continues. “We recognize that such changes can be difficult for all parties involved, particularly for artists who are deeply committed to their audiences.”
Fans are assured that they will be kept informed as efforts to resolve the situation continue. The legal counsel emphasized Winky D’s commitment to finding a solution that allows the show to proceed as planned.
Winky D, known for his energetic performances and deep connection with his audience, remains hopeful that a satisfactory resolution will be reached, ensuring his fans can celebrate the New Year with his unforgettable music.
The government’s animosity towards Winky D primarily stems from his music, which often contains socially and politically charged lyrics. Winky D’s songs frequently address issues such as corruption, social injustice, and economic challenges, which can be seen as critical of the government and its policies.
For instance, his album “Eureka Eureka” and songs like “iBotso” have been particularly controversial, as they highlight the struggles of ordinary Zimbabweans and criticize the actions of the elite.
This has led to tensions between Winky D and ZANU PF, with the party viewing his music as a threat to their image and authority.
Additionally, Winky D’s popularity and influence among the youth make him a significant figure in Zimbabwean society, further intensifying the government’s concerns about his impact on public opinion.
