Zvimba – In a bold move, Zimbabwe’s Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) launched the Sabhuku land deals campaign to tackle corruption in rural land distribution. The campaign kicked off in Hurungwe, covering five districts in Mashonaland West province which include Zvimba, Makonde, Chegutu, and Mhondoro
Local leaders, government officials, and stakeholders welcomed the initiative, aimed at promoting transparency and accountability. “We’re educating communities about corruption’s dangers and ensuring land allocation is fair,” said Charity Mudavanhu, Zacc’s senior public education officer.
Legislator Chenjerai Kangausaru praised ZACC’s efforts, highlighting concerns about illegal land parcelling and overpopulation.
“Some headmen are making deals without involving stakeholders,” he said.
Through public meetings, traditional leaders shared knowledge on acquiring land correctly. By fighting corruption, ZACC aims to protect the rights of rural communities.
The move by the anti-graft body seems to have started producing results as various people involved in illegal land deals have been arrested with the latest being a group of former war of liberation fighters being led by Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association Provincial Chairman, Cornelius Muoni who was arrested and others for the illegally parcelling out state land which they had sold to desperate home seekers in Zvimba.
The group is currently before the courts. Another land baron from Zvimba District is also being tried in the courts for illegal land sale.
