ZITF 2025: UNDP Zimbabwe delivering practical, inclusive solutions for sustainable development

On Wednesday, a Spiked Online Media correspondent visited the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Zimbabwe stand at the 2025 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) to get insights about the UN agency’s work in the country.

 

Below are excerpts from the interview:

Question 1: What is the overarching goal of UNDP Zimbabwe’s work?

Answer: At its core, UNDP Zimbabwe’s mission is to improve people’s lives. Every intervention from health and climate resilience to governance and innovation is designed to address real needs. and empower communities. The focus is on delivering practical, inclusive solutions that build resilience, reduce inequality, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Question 2: How has UNDP Zimbabwe helped vulnerable communities during times of crisis?

Answer: In 2024, Zimbabwe faced its worst drought in decades. UNDP responded by expanding irrigation systems, supporting food-insecure households, and equipping over a million smallholder farmers with climate-resilient livelihoods. Integrated programs also delivered critical services to survivors of gender-based violence and brought legal, health, and social services to remote communities through mobile One Stop Centres.

Question 3: What are some of the innovations UNDP has supported in agriculture and health?

Answer: UNDP supported research institutions like the Matopos Research Institute with state-of-the-art lab equipment to conserve and distribute superior livestock genetics. In health, UNDP helped expand solar power to 1,073 facilities and strengthened the Integrated Sample Transportation system, reducing diagnostic turnaround times from months to just 72 hours, benefitting over a million people annually.
Question 4: How is renewable energy changing lives in Zimbabwe through UNDP’s support?

Answer: UNDP is leveraging renewable energy as a catalyst for economic inclusion, In 2024, solar mini-grids and off-grid energy kiosks brought reliable electricity to remote communities. In places like Hakwata Village, residents launched new businesses, expanded income-generating activities, and improved household well-being thanks to 24/7 clean power. Over 13.8 megawatts of solar capacity has now been installed nationwide.

Question 5: What role do partnerships play in UNDP Zimbabwe’s development impact?

Answer: Partnerships are fundamental to UNDP’s work. In 2024, UNDP mobilized US$154 million with support from the Government of Zimbabwe, development partners, and technical agencies. Through joint platforms like the Renewable Energy Coordination Group and collaborative efforts in tax, health, land, and trade, UNDP ensures that collective investments deliver meaningful, lasting change.
