The President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira has rallied leaders and stakeholders to entrench democracy to enhance good governance.

He made the remarks at a meeting where he was leading a PAP delegation to the African Governance Architecture Support Project (AGA-SP) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The event aims to raise awareness among a wider constituency of stakeholders and beneficiaries on the AGA scope and activities that were implemented. This will include the activities of all project stakeholders including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) and the Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERW), Economic, Social & Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), AGA-APSA Secretariat, Charter Africa Project, Data for Governance Alliance and Expertise France.
The PAP delegation to this event, taking place from 22 to 23 May 2024, also includes the Clerk of Parliament, Ms. Lindiwe Khumalo.
Conceptualized and implemented in 2020 within the framework of a reform process led by the African Union Commission to strengthen its structural and operational effectiveness, AGA-SP’s quest was to contribute to the achievement of Aspiration 3 and 6 of the African Union’s Agenda 2063: An Africa of good governance, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law (Aspiration 3) and: An Africa, whose development is people driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth, and caring for children.
Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira was participating in a panel discussion on: “Reflections on state of play and a forecast on democratic governance in Africa: How do we get it right?”
He was joined by Mr. Thomas Huyghebaert – Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to the African Union; Dr. Robert Eno – Registrar of the AfCHPR; and Mr William Carew – Head of Secretariat at ECOSOCC.
“True democracy thrives when citizens are engaged, aligned, and empowered. Their understanding is the foundation of a strong and vibrant democracy. Let’s stop engaging on the issues of democracy in academic platforms and formal settings. We need to go to the people and gauge their experience which will enable us to define the model that suits us. Because the sense is that there’s frustration on the ground regarding how this concept has been applied to date,” Hon Chief Charumbira said.
