A feeling of sadness and loss of interest in normal activities results in depression. Unnoticed, many people slipped into depression.

Due to ignorance and lack of information, depression has been part of us for a long time, with people taking the symptoms as normal, resulting in a number of lives being lost.

According to Dr. Walter Mangezi, a psychiatrist, depression is a result of many factors, among them isolation and drug intake.

“The isolation and failure to connect with others during Covid-19 might have been an effective way of curbing Covid-19, but it created another dilemma.

“Increase in substance use amongst young people peaked with ripple effects felt even up to today,” said Dr Mangezi.

Types of depression differ, ranging from minor to severe.

Dr. Mangezi advised that as soon as people notice changes, they should visit hospitals. Answering if there is a correct diagnosis and treatment in our public hospitals, Dr Mangezi affirmed that our public institutions have the capacity to deal with depression.

“Our public institutions manage depression very well. For decades, this has been managed. It’s only that the numbers keep growing,” said Dr Mangezi.

Due to ignorance and lack of information depression has been part of us for a long time. People can not live in silos. They should find someone to talk to. A problem shared eases. Seek early treatment for any illness is encouraged. Prolonged illness results in depression.
