Hurungwe East Member of Parliament Chenjerai Kangausaru launched anti anti-drug campaign through a sports gala at Tengwe Country Club recently.
The three-day sports extravaganza saw 13 soccer teams and seven netball teams battling it out from the constituency’s seven wards. The competition was held under the Dan and Erita Maendaenda tournament. It’s in memory of the late parents of Hon Kangausaru.
The MP said his late parents had nurtured him and his siblings to value hard work, honesty, and social well-being.
“Our youth must strive to support each other’s natural talents and desist from drugs and substance abuse. Although we grew up in underdeveloped rural areas, we must search for talented soccer players who can make it to bigger teams locally or internationally. We have to help youth against drugs and substance abuse through sports,” said Hon Kangausaru.
Hurungwe Rural District Councillor for Ward 14 Mashonga Kangaderere said the tournament will help reduce drug and substance abuse among the youth.
“Our youth must be kept occupied through sports. This will help them against drugs and substance abuse,” said Kangaderere.
Ironically Kangaderere Ward’s netball team was the best and pocketed USD 200, gold medals, trophy, ball, and uniform. All participating teams got uniforms and balls. Tengwe Central under the Ward 2 soccer team won the men’s soccer games and got USD300 among others.
A former national team netball league player, Ropafadzo Murwira, noted that the sports tournament is aimed at reducing cases of early marriages and pregnancies among rural girls.
“The tournament took all participants some time through preparation and few engaged in social ills. It helped to groom sportsmen and women who value their actions on the positives in their communities. We are grateful to the Kangausaru family for getting resources to make sure the tournament remains an annual event,” said Murwira who is Kangausaru wife.
She is also a former national team netball team member during her school days at Mwami Primary School in Hurungwe North constituency. Drugs and substance abuse are reducing the younger generation’s potential to succeed in life.
