Hamilton Masakadza showed that his retirement probably came far too soon for Zimbabwe cricket lovers when he returned to action for Takashinga Patriots 1 to score a brilliant 120 in a National Premier League (NPL) derby against Takashinga Patriots 2, an alternate rather than a second team for a club which is so strong that it can afford to split its strength.
Despite the genius of the former national captain, though, the rest of his side, except for Timycen Maruma with 35, failed with the bat and lost the match played at their home ground in Highfield on Sunday.
Masakadza’s 120 came off only 100 balls and he hit eight sixes and seven fours, his team’s innings ending at 230 for nine wickets.
Takashinga Patriots 2 made a strong reply, though, with Aliakbar Hamid opening the innings and scoring 58 not out off 84 balls and Prince Masvaure 44 not out off 67, their unbroken third-wicket partnership adding 105 runs.
The score was 142 for two off 28 overs when bad light stopped play, and on Duckworth-Lewis Takashinga Patriots 2 were declared winners by 28 runs.

Uprising won by seven wickets
There was a quick finish to this NPL match at Kwekwe Sports Club, where Aisha Chibanda scored 42 not out to lead Uprising to a seven-wicket victory over Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC).
BAC, put in to bat, never shaped well against the mixed bowling attack of Uprising, five bowlers taking two wickets each in a total of 102.
The top scorers were Kuda Kaitano and Vitalis Buwu, who both made 18.
It took Uprising only 13 overs to knock off the runs for the loss of three wickets, with Chibanda taking only 19 balls to score his 42 runs, with four sixes and four fours.

Scorpions won by 88 runs
Some fine bowling by Blessed Muzite, who took four wickets for only nine runs, and Nkosilathi Nungu, with three for 12, helped Scorpions to an 88-run victory over Golden Bulls in their NPL fixture at Masvingo Sports Club on Sunday.
Muzite, captain and opening batter, also began the match well by scoring 30, holding the Scorpions top order together as they struggled to 96 for six after being put in to bat.
The top score was made by Nezbert Maringire who came in at number eight and hit 55, enabling his team to reach a final total of 195.
With Nungu and Muzite bowling well, Bulls were virtually out of the match when they had five wickets down for 31.
Tendai Tapera (46) and Misheck Gwizi (26) fought hard with a sixth-wicket partnership of 58, but the final total was only 107.

Kadoma Cricket Club won by six wickets
Bright Matsiwe, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, and Brandon Mavuta all scored good fifties to give Kadoma Cricket Club a wonderful start to their first season in the NPL, as they beat Mutare Sports Club by six wickets at Old Hararians Sports Club on Sunday.
Kaitano as the captain put Mutare in to bat, and Davis Murwendo removed their opening pair for six runs on the board.
Donald Tiripano with a sound 65 and John Masara with 43 led a recovery that took the final score to 216, with three wickets each for Murwendo, Victor Chirwa and Mavuta.
When Kadoma went in, Matsiwe opened the innings with some powerful hitting, scoring 68 off 46 balls with three sixes and eight fours.
Kaitano followed up with a cool 50 not out off 65 balls, but he was outshone in a third-wicket partnership of 107 by Mavuta, whose 60 came off only 42 balls.
It took Kadoma only 34.1 overs to complete their well-deserved victory.

Queens Sports Club won by 69 runs
Tanaka Zvaita gave Queens Sports Club a flying start in their home match with a brilliant half-century against Mbizo Cricket Club, which led the way for a comfortable 69-run victory.
Zvaita scored his runs off only 56 balls, with help for the second wicket from Ian Fuzane with 31, and then the captain Tanatswa Bechani scored 40 not out.
The tail went out quickly, though, due mainly to Ronald Masocha, who took four wickets for 47, the total being 191 for eight wickets.
Mbizo made a slow start and were never able to make up for it as wickets kept falling.
Panashe Mugari made the top score of 23, although, after being 93 for nine, the last man Manson Chikowero slogged 20 not out off only nine balls.
Bechani was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 14.
