The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) was praised for its prompt action against a NetOne cashier arrested for fraud following a tip-off.

Appearing in court on Thursday, the state charged that using proceeds from fraudulent activities, Daniel Kalira (39) reportedly had a sudden lifestyle change after he splashed the loot on luxury cars.

Our investigations suggest that NetOne could have reported Kalira to ZACC, although there is no clear evidence about how the public anti-corruption body nailed Kalira. Investigations by ZACC revealed that the cashier had diverted more than Z$150 million from the mobile phone network provider in a space of two years.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda charged with theft.

He was freed on Z$20,000 bail and remanded to 27 June 2022.

Speaking to Spiked Online Media, John Muromo, a businessman based in the eastern border town of Mutare praised ZACC and NetOne for collaborating to plug corruption.

“ZACC is appearing to be serious in fighting corruption. I personally commend the collaboration between ZACC and NetOne that was efficient in nailing the culprit. It’s pleasing that the cars brought from the proceeds of theft were recovered. My call is for ZACC to extend the dragnet to high-profile corrupt people instead of concentrating on small fish like Kalira,” Muromo said.

He went on to praise President Emmerson Mnangagwa for firing Mr. Douglas Karoro for allegedly defrauding the Presidential Inputs Scheme of US$73 300 in an inputs scam.

NetOne denied commenting on the matter regarding its employee since the case is in the courts.
