Zimnat helps local journalist sharpen business reporting skills

Zimnat is sponsoring a Zimbabwean financial journalist’s participation in the annual Sanlam Summer School for Financial Journalists being held in Hartebeespoort, which is outside Johannesburg in South Africa, next week.

After inviting media houses to nominate a young business or financial reporter who might benefit from this summer school, Zimnat decided to sponsor Tatira Zwinoira, a business reporter with NewsDay and The Standard.

This will be the first time a Zimbabwean journalist has attended the summer school, which Sanlam has been running annually since 2003.

The summer school is intended to contribute to good journalism by providing training for young financial journalists, preferably those with three years’ experience or less. Initially for South African journalists, the summer school was opened up to journalists from other African countries in 2013.

As a company associated with Sanlam, the largest non-banking financial services group on the continent, Zimnat was given the opportunity to sponsor a Zimbabwean journalist as part of its own contribution to promoting good financial journalism.

Mr Zwinoira has been a business reporter for NewsDay and The Standard at Alpha Media since September 2015. He is also a freelance reporter for a United States-based online media outlet, OZY Media.

This year’s Sanlam Summer School for Financial Journalists begins on Sunday (November 4) and runs until Friday (November 9).

Zimnat is covering the full costs of Mr Zwinoira’s participation in the course, including travel, accommodation and meals.

“As one of the country’s leading insurance and financial services groups, Zimnat appreciates the importance of empowering young journalists to sharpen their business reporting skills.

“It is our hope that by providing this sponsorship, we will be able to contribute to the development of insightful financial reporting skills on the part of the journalist being sponsored and that this will contribute to good business and financial reporting generally,” commented Zimnat group marketing executive Angela Mpala.
